Paul Tas (b. 1976, Amsterdam) is an interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, sound, electronics, painting, experimental instruments, installation and performance.
For more than three decades, Tas has developed a distinctive practice at the intersection of visual art and experimental technology. His work draws from Dutch CoBrA, Dada, Japanese experimental art, noise, sound art and electronic music, while remaining firmly rooted in hands-on making.
Tas sees little separation between artwork, instrument and machine. A circuit board can become a sculpture, a machine can become a performer, and an instrument can exist as both a functional device and a unique artwork.
From the 1990s through the 2000s, he created wooden robots, ceramic sculptures, mechanical objects, constructions and installations that often combine humour, emotion and technological elements. Since the early 2010s, sound, electronics and experimental instrument design have become increasingly central to his practice.
