DANNY WOLFERS BUILDS A FICTIONAL WORLD THROUGH IMAGE AND SOUND IN NIGHTWIND VALLEY

Five paintings and five sound compositions come together to form a town that exists only in the imagination.

At Art The Hague 2026, [GRID] Gallery presents NIGHTWIND VALLEY, a new intermedia project by artist and musician Danny Wolfers, internationally best known under his alias Legowelt. Under the title Five Scenes from a Geofictional Town, Wolfers creates a fictional town through five paintings made in watercolor and fineliner. Each work has its own sound composition on cassette tape, hidden inside the frame. Image and sound together form fragments of a place that does not exist in reality, yet gradually begins to feel increasingly tangible through looking and listening.

A TOWN THAT IS NEVER SHOWN IN FULL
NIGHTWIND VALLEY is rooted in the idea of geofiction: the creation and shaping of places and worlds that do not exist. Wolfers deliberately never reveals the town in its entirety. Instead, the visitor is given individual scenes, names, sounds and geographical clues.

What lies beyond the frame remains open. Who lives behind the windows? Where do the streets lead? What history does this place have, and what kind of culture has developed there? The visitor fills in the missing parts and, in doing so, becomes a co-architect of Nightwind Valley.

The project is accompanied by a limited-edition, numbered and signed zine featuring reproductions of the five paintings and a map of Nightwind Valley. The map gives the fictional town a more tangible form without defining it completely.

Precisely because the world remains unfinished, it can continue to exist after the visitor leaves the exhibition. In memory, during a moment of boredom, or in the half-awake state just before sleep, its streets can be revisited and further imagined.

A PLACE DOES NOT NEED TO EXIST TO BECOME A MEMORY
NIGHTWIND VALLEY explores the boundary between fiction and memory. Can a place you have never physically visited still begin to feel familiar? And can an invented geography eventually become part of your own memory?

DANNY WOLFERS
Danny Wolfers has long worked across electronic music, visual art, graphic design and the creation of fictional worlds. As Legowelt, he has built an extensive body of electronic music, while imagery and storytelling have also remained an important part of his practice.

In NIGHTWIND VALLEY, these disciplines come together. The cassette tape is not merely a sound carrier, but a physical part of each artwork. Each painting, together with its own soundtrack, forms a separate fragment of the same imaginary world.
